Counter-Strike is a first-person shooter video game initially developed by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe and released as modification for Half-Life game in 1999. Later Le and Cliffe were hired by Valve Corporation and the game's intellectual property was acquired. Counter-Strike expanded into the huge Counter-Strike series. Several remakes and Ports of Counter-Strike have been released on different platforms.
Counter Strike 1.6 is the latest version of the first series. For years it's the most popular online shooter in the world. You can
download and play it for free.
Players around the globe assume the roles of members of two teams - terrorists and counter-terrorists. During each round of gameplay, they should fight each other and do some tasks like defusing the bomb or resquing hostages. Each player could buy some new weapons and accessories at the beginning of the round with currency being earned after the end of the match.
Why do you think CS is so popular for 15 years? The answer is very simple. First it's interesting gameplay where you can show all your skills and performance not only of your PC but also keyboard and a mouse. Second is high quality network game where you can have fun and spend time with other people. Free distribution of the game during many years, low system requirements, different modifications made by enthusiasts and stable work made it so popular.
It's not hard to find where to
download CS 1.6, but you should know something before doing it.
There are different versions of the core components of the game: network protocol, game client build and SteamID Emulator.
The oldest Counter Strike 1.6 versions used network protocol version 46 and it's obsolete now. There is no or almost no servers accepting these old clients.
Soon after p48 build was officially released many game servers were updated and stopped accepting p47 clients. To solve this problem a server addon Dpoto ("double-protocol") was developed. It allowed cliens with p47 and p48 play on the same server.
The most popular protocol nowadays is 48 (sometimes marked as p48). Just a year-two ago there were a lot of players using older p47, but the number of them is decreasing due to few reasons:
- Old protocol cliens were vulnerable for slowhacking, so mostly all of them are broken now
- Maintainers of custom game client versions use p48 now, so it's harder and harder to find actual link for downloading old p47 client
- There are a lot of cheats developed for p47 builds and many game server administrators who believe it's the solution against cheaters to block p47 clients from entering the server.
All our builds of CS 1.6 use multi-protocol plugin which allows you to join both p47 and p48 servers.
SteamID emulator RevEmu is also included.
And, finally, few words about the game client builds. The most popular build is
4554 (released in 2009), but day to day newest
6153 version (released in 2013) became more and more popular.
Both of these builds
are compartible to each other, i.e. you'll be able to join any counter strike server using any of them.
There are a lot of modifications made in the code, but not so much of them are noticable by player. Maybe most important is the native support of Unicode, i.e. now you can use your native language in game chat and console. Something changed with graphics, slightly different mouse movement (taken from the latest Counter Strike: Source), client became protected from most of the slow hacking attempts like automatic connection to some server, ads in game menu or spam in the game chat and doest not require a plugin named "protector" any more.
So, which Counter Strike to download? It's on your own. Just try one of our builds and in case you'll have some problems or difficulties - try another one. In any case don't forget ro bookmark this page.
